Frou Frou is an electronic music duo renowned for their distinctive fusion of ethereal and experimental soundscapes. The duo comprises English singer-songwriter Imogen Heap and producer Guy Sigsworth. Their music is characterized by Imogen Heap’s captivating vocals and Guy Sigsworth’s intricate production as a musician who previously served as the keyboard player and music director for Björk. Together, they craft a dreamy and atmospheric musical experience.
Off Cuts, the latest EP from the British duo, Frou Frou, represents a collection of reworked old demos with a contemporary production that is nothing short of amazing. The album weaves together exquisite soundscapes, built from layers of synths and vocal arrangements. Notably, “Guitar Song” stands out as a remarkable element within the record, as it consists of just two components—guitars and vocals—and provides a refreshing and introspective pause in the album.
My personal favorite from the EP is “Sane Again,” which masterfully incorporates various elements, including a Japanese instrument (koto) and subtle distortions in the chorus.
Though I had heard of Frou Frou, before, I must confess that I had never listened to any of their work until now, and I must say I am genuinely surprised! The transformation of old demos into a stunning collection of soundscapes, orchestrated by Sigsworth, employing numerous layers of synthesizers and other unique elements, such as electrical wire sounds, whistles and even the nostalgic sound of an old internet modem, is a testament to their artistry.
If you are a fan of alternative pop, this album is a must-listen!
